Every March, the heart of Gretna fills with the spirit of two cultures as we celebrate our Italian and Irish roots with a parade that’s a one-of-a-kind experience! Founded on March 26, 2023, the Gretna Italian-Irish Parade brings together our community to honor the Italian and Irish heritage that’s deeply woven into the New Orleans area. It's a lively fusion of St. Patrick's Day and St. Joseph's Day traditions, combining the best of both worlds into a celebration that only Gretna could host.
The parade was created to highlight the lasting cultural contributions of Italian and Irish immigrants, who brought with them strong family values, vibrant traditions, and a love for good food. Our floats aren’t just loaded with colorful beads—they’re stocked with cabbages, carrots, potatoes, and even pasta! Parade-goers catch these “ingredients” as they fly through the air, symbolizing the hearty stew of our shared heritage. The parade route weaves through historic Gretna, starting at Burmaster and Franklin Streets and ending at Fourth Street and Huey P. Long Avenue.
